FAQ
Questions and answers
About the gate, hosted translation, pricing and security. Anything else: hello@shipglot.com.
The QA gate
- Is the QA gate free, and does it need an account?
- Yes, it is free, and no, it needs no account. The CLI and the GitHub Action are open source under Apache-2.0. Run
npx shipglot checkin your project. - Does the gate send my files anywhere?
- No.
check, lock, statusandinitrun locally and make no network requests. Onlytranslate, syncandpushtalk to the hosted service, and only with a token. See Security. - Which file formats does it read?
- 13 formats: i18next JSON, next-intl / FormatJS JSON, vue-i18n JSON, vue-i18n YAML, Laravel PHP lang arrays, Laravel JSON, Rails i18n YAML, GNU gettext PO, Flutter ARB, Apple String Catalog, Android strings.xml, .NET RESX, XLIFF 1.2 / 2.x. The guides show the setup for each framework.
- What does it check?
- 17 checks, each with a failing and a passing example on its check page. Every check can be set to error, warning, info or off.
- How do I check only what a pull request changed?
- Commit
shipglot.lock(npx shipglot lock), then runshipglot check --changedor setchanged-only: trueon the Action. The docs explain the lockfile. - Can I check a file without installing anything?
- Yes. The browser tools check xcstrings, ARB, Android strings.xml, RESX, XLIFF and PO files inside the page. Nothing is uploaded.
Hosted translation
- When does hosted translation open?
- It is built and tested but not open yet, and there is no date. The gate works today.
- Which AI models translate my strings?
- Models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. A test battery scores them on real strings for each language group, and a routing file sets which one translates, which one back-checks, and a fallback on a different provider for every role. No model id is fixed in the product.
- Are my strings used to train models?
- Shipglot does not train models on your content. Requests to OpenAI are sent with response storage off. The providers' API terms apply; see Data processing and sub-processors.
- Can people who are not developers review translations?
- Yes. The reviewer editor is a web page for product people, translators and support staff. Reviewers approve, edit, comment and suggest, and the result goes back to the repository as a pull request.
- Is there a translator marketplace or human translation?
- No. Shipglot translates with AI and checks the result. Your own reviewers, or translators you hire, review in the editor.
Pricing and billing
- What is a source key?
- One string in your source language, such as
auth.failed. Its translations do not count again. Your band is the highest number of source keys across all your projects in the month. - What happens when I go over my band?
- The difference for the rest of the period is charged the same day, prorated, and you move to the next band. A move to a lower band starts at the next renewal. Above 100,000 keys it is $2.50 per 1,000 keys on top of $249.
- Can I get a bill I did not expect?
- No. Billing is prepaid: subscriptions are charged at the start of each month or year, upgrades when they happen, and translation beyond the included amount needs credits bought in advance. Nothing is invoiced in arrears.
- How much translation is included?
- Each month, one full pass over your keys into each target language: 10 words per source key per language, for up to 60 languages. Beyond that, prepaid credits from $10 per 100,000 words.
- What does the free band include?
- Up to 500 source keys with every feature, including SAML single sign-on, the audit log, webhooks and the API. The next band is $12 a month up to 2,000 keys.
- Is there a discount for annual billing?
- Yes. Annual billing charges 10 months for 12.
- Is it free for open source?
- Yes, for public repositories under an OSI-approved licence, at least 90 days old, not forks and not archived, with the Shipglot badge in the README. Eligibility is checked through the GitHub API, with no form.
- How do I cancel?
- In the billing portal, at any time. The subscription ends at the end of the period you paid for.
